Thoughts on the #XXLFreshmen2012 cover that no one seems to care about anymore

And just like that, no one cares about this anymore. Yesterday, it occupied my twitter timeline more aggressively than any of the Occupy Wall Street protestors, and today, I see no whisper of it on my Twitter timeline. I'm writing about it mostly because I wrote nearly this whole post yesterday. Anywho, the yearly Freshmen issue, where XXL Magazine editors or whoever chooses a certain number of so-called Freshmen, is what keeps the magazine relevant, despite the fact that it really isn't that relevant (just examine the inductees each year). I don't really have too much to say about this cover, mostly because I work now, compared to the time when last year's cover dropped, so I don't have time to wake up at 11 every day and stay up until 2 AM making a whiny blog post about who should or shouldn't have been included. I only know who Machine Gun Kelly is because of that Lex Luger-produced song "Wild Boy" that makes me want to go start riots and burn stuff. But, let's be honest, the Fat Trel version is way better (why isn't Fat Trel on this list?). Danny Brown is a thirty year old Freshman. He's actually super dope, and I'm glad he's getting recognized, but it just goes to show how XXL Magazine truly has no guidelines or limitations on who can or can't be considered a "Freshman." That was my issue with last year's list, and that'll probably be my issue next year. Whenever I list to Future, I feel like I'm listening to a language immersion program CD. To what language, I don't know. Roscoe Dash is my favorite robotic hook man, having some of the more memorable hooks throughout the last year. I don't think I could handle ...

Tha Hottest 15 Albums of 2011, according to Tha Blog is Hot

By "albums," I really mean "projects," which includes mixtapes, EP's, or whatever. I can't tell the difference between some albums and mixtapes, so I just wanted to make a list of my favorite 15 projects that I loved from 2011. 15. J. Pinder dropped Code Red 2.0 last January, and it was great. Pinder is more soulful than most rappers, and I appreciate that. There's just something about Code Red 2.0. For some reason, it struck a chord with me, probably because I could relate to him wanting to get out and go far. Well, I'm still in the same place, and Code Red 2.0 is still good, so whatevs. Read my original review of Code Red 2.0 here.   14. I interviewed Donnis right before he dropped Southern Lights this year, so that was pretty trill. Not to mention two of my top songs from 2011 are found on here, but Southern Lights was a dope tape from start to finish, and I'm kind of surprised that no one else is including it on their lists with production from Needlz, Syience, and the Cataracs, among others. The transition between "Ford Mustang" and "Ray Ban Vision" is uh-maze-ing.   13. Like Southern Lights, Zero Heroes was a dope tape from start to finish, and I really appreciated XV's mixtape theme throughout the project. No one has ever made nerd hop sound as good as XV, who I am pretty sure is one of the most endearing rappers out there.

Tha Hottest 13 Hot Messes of 2011, according to Tha Blog is Hot

I use the term "hot mess" freely, and more oftentimes than not, endearingly, mostly because it's such an all encompassing term. In other words, I use it both positively and negatively. Plus, it works well with the whole name of my blog and all. Case in point, that hood Harry Potter post is a hot mess...in a good way. One of the funniest things I've seen this year. I love it...a lot. Anyway, here's my list of the 13 Hottest Hot Messes of 2011. See this increasing list size as I go? Yeah? 13. Lil B is falls under the affectionate definition of "hot mess." As positive, loving to his fans, and appreciative of his cat, as he is...he's still kind of a hot mess. But, he's the Based God. Arguably, Lil B's verse from "Grove St Party" on Weezy's Sorry 4 The Wait could have occupied this list spot. Or Sorry 4 The Wait could have. But, Lil B is not the Based God for nothing. Thank you, Based God.   12. Gucci Mane was sentenced to 6 months in prison in September for pushing a woman out of a moving vehicle, after he had mistaken her for a prostitute, and she wasn't. Of course, it's completely natural and normal to be picked up in the morning, asking if you want to go to breakfast. Um, no. She should get her own number in this Hot Mess list.   11. If you thought Gucci was bad, TI probably set the record in returning to prison. He was released from prison, and picked up by a luxury ...

Tha Hottest 11 Music Videos of 2011, according to Tha Blog is Hot

I did "Tha Hottest 9 songs of 2011" on Monday (peep that shit), and now that it's Wednesday, AKA not Trap Tuesday, I can continue with these lists. Fortunately, I didn't have any formatting issues with this post that made me think about punching kittens (to clarify, no kittens were around, and I only thought about punching them...but the mere thought is pretty bad, yes). 11. Special Problems is the creative force behind David Dallas' video for "Take a Picture." Besides rapping with a kitten in his hoodie, 7 different directors/animators interpreted 7 parts of the song, with each getting a specific segment and each scene was shot in a different format. During the coarse of the video, none of the directors could see what the others were doing. And did I mention there's a kitten in his hoodie? 10. Even if "All of the Lights" induces epileptic seizures, I still really enjoyed what Hype Williams did for Kanye's dramatic "All of the Lights" video that featured a million other artists. I will continue to stress how I'm a sucker for the lights. 9. October's Very Own crew members Lamar Taylor and Hyghly Alleyne directed Drake's video "The Motto"  that featured Lil Wayne & Tyga. I enjoyed the simplicity of it, with the images of Drake dancing around (specifically at 1:28) layered on to the video. I don't know the technical term for that, but it's trill. 8. Todd Angkasuwan directed everything for Evidence's DJ Premier-produced track "You" found on Cats & Dogs, not coincidentally one of my favorite albums of the year. "You" was simple, and I felt like the video really complimented the song, and captured ...

Tha Hottest 9 songs of 2011, according to Tha Blog is Hot

Let me preface these lists. I went to this internet marketing workshop one time, and they recommended that in order to capture people's attention, you choose random numbers for lists. So today, it's the top 9 songs from 2011. Tomorrow it won't be anything for Trap Tuesdays, but the next day I'll resume my listmania. I bet you're wondering how I chose these songs. Actually, I bet you really don't care. Let's be honest. I based my list off priarily of the 'smart' playlist I created in iTunes for the occasion, and partly but what I find myself still wanting to listen to now that it's 2012 and all. 9. Rihanna's "Birthday Cake" is produced by The-Dream, but that's not why I love it. The song is hot, is catchy, and most importantly, makes me want to shake my ass. And it's not even a full song! It's a minute and a half of bliss found on Talk That Talk. Listen here: "Birthday Cake" by Rihanna   8. Most of the time I like to good naturedly make fun of Wale, because he kind of asks for it, but I will admit when he sounds good, and boy does he sound good on "Bait." While I really like ignorant music, I especially like Wale on that ignorant stuff, like this Tone P produced track. "Bait" was a bonus cut on Ambition, and was on his Eleven One Eleven Theory mixtape. Bait bait bait bait bait! Listen here: Wale ft. TCB "Bait" 7. "I Think I Love You" by State of the Artist (aka SOTA) was one of my early favorites on 2011. It tends to ...
