Pharrell to release a coffee table book

Pharrell is one of the most interesting people in the music industry because of all the work he's done over the years, but also because he has managed to remain somewhat enigmatic. He should be in those Dos Equis commercials instead of that old guy, especially now that he's releasing a book called Places & Spaces I've Been. Coffee table books are so under-appreciated. From the BBC blog: This is a coffee table style book which will feature conversations between Pharrell and some friends who have inspired him such as Anna Wintour, Nigo, Buzz Aldrin, Takashi Murakami, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Hans Zimmer, Ambra Medda, Chad & Shae. The rest of the book will contain photos which cover most of Pharrell’s career. The book will be released October 16th and will retail for $55. Multiple colored cover options will be available as well as a limited edition version ($250) which will include something special which we won’t unveil until closer to the release date. I wonder which color I'll get. Fortunately, my multi colored rug which likely match all of them. BBC

Rihanna makes Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list

Rihanna made the cut--um...no pun intended...seriously--for Time Magazine's annual 100 Most Influential People list, among other celebrities from all walks of life. Other people who made it include President Obama, his opponent Mitt Romney, Adele, Chelsea Handler, Tim Tebow, and Jeremy Lin, and then 93 others. So...yeah. I won't argue why I don't think she should have made the list, because you'd have to be really simp to not know, and besides, I kind of like her. In fact, I take a lot of fashion cues from her, and I'm waiting for my stupid tax refund check to get here so I can cop this purse. Regarding MTV trying to make a news story out of Rihanna's instagram picture: @MTV Yikes.... @rihanna ran out of fucks to give — Rihanna (@rihanna) April 19, 2012 Again, another reason I can't find it in my heart to not like her. *Goes and listens to "Cake (Remix)" on repeat, bows head in shame.* MTV

The voice inside Nicki Minaj’s head told her to delete her twitter account

Nicki Minaj received a bunch of attention last week when she abruptly deleted her Twitter account after getting pissed at one of her fan websites for posting a leaked song or something (yeah, roll call for who downloaded her album over a week before it came out in stores...). Conveniently enough, she did this as she's promoting her new album. Throughout the innanet, I observed people arguing that she alienated her 11 million plus twitter fan base by doing this, but isn't a fan base supposed to buy her album? With first week sales at 253, 000, that is approximately 2.3% of her twitter followers shelling out $10 or whatever for the record. Some fan base. As told to Graham Norton, here's the reason she deleted her account: A voice in my head told me to delete my Twitter and that’s what I did. I had 11 million followers and I hope they will wait for me. Le sigh. Nicki, Nicki, Nicki (2 Chainz voice). Actually, I always commend people who don't have twitter. I automatically assume they have their shit together more than me. Rap-Up

Two Jeezy concerts in a row end early with unscheduled gunfire

I'm still mad that I missed the Jeezy concert in Seattle because I was sick from allergies (what bullshit). Based on what I heard about it, the sound sucked, and unrelatedly, I'm sure I could have found a nice husband there. You can decide if I'm joking or not. Anyway, two Jeezy shows in a row up in Toronto have had to be shut down due to guns being fired inside the concert venues. On Wednesday at the Sound Academy, the show was shut down after some guy shot another guy over an altercation. On Thursday at the London Music Hall, the show was shut down after shots were fired during the opening act. Both instances had people transported to hospitals with gunshot wounds. Leave your drama at home, people! Or at least don't take it into a concert! HHDX

Pharrell hanging out with Barack Obama again

I don't know the specifics of this photo, some fundraiser I'd imagine, but Pharrell is hanging out with President Obama again, along with other people like Anna Wintour. I don't know if it's true, but I've read that Obama is having trouble raking in the money from his wealthy donors like last election cycle. I don't think Hollywood has recovered from his administration's lack of support against the fabled SOPA bill. I'm still jealous that he gets to hang out with Pharrell. I'll never forget the moment when I found out that McCain officially conceded, and Obama was elected. I was in the middle of my 3 hour long, weekly course on Dante's trilogy, which includes The Inferno. Yeah. Anyhow, I've been thinking about starting to paint again. It's just that whole issue of having enough time that gets in the way. I kind of miss it, and I'm kind of thinking, more seriously than ever, that I'll need to become an expatriate come November, regardless of who wins the Presidential election. Rihanna wears pajamas on the red carpet…

Oh, Rihanna. She's really wearing some Emilio Pucci pajamas on a red carpet for her Battleship movie premiere. Her face and hair look really pretty, but when you look down, homegirl kind of looks like a mess. I don't know why she wants to cover up her body like that (let me tell you, I don't suffer at the gym to hide in baggy clothes). One of the ladies at work wears sweats every day, and my parents/bosses would never let me fly with that shit. I always ask if I can, mostly to see their reactions, but ultimately, I hold myself to higher standards and can't imagine going out in public wearing sweats or pajamas like this. Putting on actual pants instead of sweats or pajamas really isn't that difficult when it comes down to it (that's what I tell myself in the face of temptation, anyhow). MTV via SR

DJ Drama is not a fan of No DJ mixtapes

DJ Drama's discussion with Bootleg Kev was really interesting to me for a couple reasons. First, I honestly believe that DJ Drama would probably be one of the dopest, most interesting people to interview, and I'm living vicariously through Bootleg Kev. As he kind of mentioned toward the end of their interview, he's seen the culture change, and mixtapes move decidedly mainstream, and it's always fascinating to talk to someone who has not only been in the game that long, but who has been such an active member. Then, of course, there's the whole discussion about mixtapes, and how DJ Drama isn't a fan of no DJ mixtapes, once a DJ-hosted mixtape has already been released. While the internet--or just Google--is a vast, vast source of information, it also contributes to the loss of things. For example, the word "exclusive" basically means nothing these days. Sure, Blog A might get the song sent to them as an exclusive, but with Blog B, C, D, etc. downloading it and posting themselves, who cares anymore? And if any of them label it as exclusive, who cares, or more importantly, fact checks? By extension, I really don't think a fair amount of people understand the actual definition of a mixtape, as DJ Drama explains that the point of them used to be a DJ would mix it for the artist; hence the name, "mixtapes." From the blogging perspective, I never really do understand what to call these releases, so I normally settle on the ambiguous "project." And now I feel a little guilty to be enjoying the NODJ version of Blue Dream & Lean so much... Beef that nobody cares about: J. Cole and Diggy Simmons

Or, beef that people care less about than The-Dream and The Weeknd. That one was so wack that I didn't even blog about it. Not that Diggy Simmons beefing with J. Cole isn't wack, either, because it is. Whateverrrrrr. It's Sunday, and I'm working from my home office (aka my bed) so I ain't got a lot going on. Supposedly, this war of words in rap music was sparked years ago when Diggy was like 2 years old in 2010 when J. Cole released "Purple Rain" with the following lyrics: Good girl huh, father was a preacher sent her off to college thought I got her on a leash though from the outside though, them girls be the squeakiest you get ‘em inside them girls be the freakiest mischievous, downright devious say she want cake I got all the right ingredients running round fronting like a pure white virgin gave a n-gga dome while her father gave a Sermon Amen, let the choir sing she be walking round campus like the quiet thing so n-ggas scared to approach when they admiring man if they know like I know she got that fire thing pour a little OJ with some P-trone I’m feeling ok, but homie she’s gone when remmy Rev called she just ignore him I had her calling on God till the weed and than I hit the door n-gga Cole also stoked the flame with "Grew Up Fast," where he basically just namedrops Diggy, Russell, and Vanessa, but reportedly it was the 2 year old "Purple Rain" that pissed off Diggy. Yawn. Moving along. So, someone mysteriously leaked "What You Say To Me" on April 1st, and, get ready for it, it isn't an April Fool's joke. It's like that awkward moment when someone has a Pomeranian acting all ferocious like it ...

If this is what it means to be a Taylor, then I’m in!

I'm still not gonna wear Chuck Taylors, though. Wiz Khalifa recently bought a nice eco-friendly house in the middle of the woods in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. The modern home is 3,891 square feet with a guesthouse on 2.8 acres, and he paid $900k for it. Can you imagine Amber Rose living all quaint in the woods like this...? Yeah, I can't, either. How on Earth would you be able to call the paparazzi to stage photo ops in a place like this? Although the property isn't quite what was described in "Errday"--"My mansion sittin' on 40 acres, who the neighbors?/Kobe Bryant from the Lakers, now that's paper"--it's still pretty nice. It's more likely that he has some Steelers neighbors than Kobe. Definitely not your quintessential, stereotypical rapper house. It even comes with some kiddy rooms, but I'm too lazy to include those. All that matters, and I write this sarcastically, is that there is no ATM like there is in Drizzy's house. Spotted at Rap-Up

Corrections Officer Rick Ross wins name lawsuit over the original Rick Ross

With that title, I tried to make everything as clear as possible. In case you didn't know, the rapper Rick Ross (pictured above) adopted his name from "Freeway" Rick Ross, the drug dealer, probably since he used to be a Corrections Officer and hoped that he could gain some street cred. Today was the second time that the real Rick Ross lost his court case against the rapper for infringing upon his name. AllHipHop.com explains the first case, writing that "the earlier ruling stated that Freeway Ricky Ross could not legally trademark his name, because he became popular due to 'illegal activity,' which the judge said could not be used to establish a 'secondary meaning.'" In other words, because Freeway Rick Ross did something illegal, he has no rights to his government name? Am I interpreting this correctly? I, personally, would be pissed if someone was going by my name, and benefitting off my notoriety. That's kind of wack, but I guess that's our legal system, flaws and all. Regardless, identify theft is a real problems, kids, and most homeowners insurance policies will offer that protection (in case you're wondering). I also didn't realize this, but while Freeway Rick Ross was locked up, rapper Rick Ross went to visit him, to ask about using his name. In laymens terms, his answer was "hell-to-the-no," but he obviously went ahead and used it anyway. Using other people's experiences as a yard stick for learning will help you tremendously. — Freeway Rick Ross (@FreewayRicky) March 29, 2012 TMZ via AllHipHop.com
