Its OK, Lupe, I didn’t vote for Obama, either

Lupe liberated “Words I Never Said” at midnight EST last night (right when Gossip Girl was on for us west coasters…I listened to the song during commercials). I’m not really feeling the Skylar Grey hook, and I don’t find Lupe’s delivery to be particularly passionate, or as charged as his subject matter (I’m comparing this to his other music). Honestly, in general I hate saying anything negative on here, and I especially hate to say anything less than stellar about any Lupe track because I know the Lupe stans will hunt me down like they did last night on twitter. I never understood people who are so inspired by Lupe’s music (or anyone’s music, for that matter) and they use that energy to hate on people over avenues like twitter who disagree with them. Ironic much?

All the blogs I’ve glanced at are freaking out about the political matter of this song. But if you follow Lupe, don’t you know that he’s always talking about these topics? That’s how I feel, at least.

You can read all the lyrics here. I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of young people whose lives are ruined, metaphorically speaking, after hearing Lupe say ”Gaza strip was getting bombed, Obama didn’t say shit/Thats why I aint vote for him, next one either.” I cackled at that line (and then rolled my eyes before that at him calling Beck and Limbaugh racists…why is he even giving them the time of day?). I had a suspicion that Lupe hated all politicians (he is certainly very vocal about hating my brethren), and my suspicions were strengthened after he told me 1984 is his favorite book, but he finally vocalizes his views on Obama.

HOWEVER, if “Words I Never Said” is going to be the catalyst to get you, my dear reader, involved in our political system, then kudos to Lupe. I was talking to my editor, Will, over at Members Only, and we were talking about the frustrations for young people with the political environment, and getting involved. I know it sounds a little corny, but the first thing you can do to get involved is to write your Congressman/Congressman (find out who your representative is here). If you don’t write them, how are they supposed to know your frustrations with the war or predatory banks (examples from “Words I Never Said”)? And, yes, they should write you back because one of my tasks as an intern was to input ALL constituent correspondence. It can be as simple as “Yo Congressman X, even though my kid’s school was shut down after budget cuts, it sucked to begin with, and the Race to the Top showed us that these Washington schools are terrible, but not terrible enough to get that funding, so our kids are still going to suffer” (inspired from the content of “Words I Never Said”).

You can listen to “Words I Never Said” on lupefiasco.com. I can’t embed it here (thanks, Blogger) but it will be available to purchase on iTunes on February 8th (oooooo an early birthday present for me, thanks Lupe!) which is the day before my birthday. And I’m sure you won’t forget, but I’ll remind you anyway: Lasers drops on March 8th.
