Concert review – Big Sean, CyHi The Prynce & Shawn Chrystopher on the I Am Finally Famous Tour

After attending the I Am Finally Famous Tour at the Showbox Sodo, I feel as if it is safe to say that Big Sean, CyHi The Prynce and Shawn Chrystopher are Finally Famous. Selling out shows every night, having all the kids line up hours beforehand in the terrible weather. Yes, they’re finally famous indeed.

Let me just say, the weather was beyond wretched. It was so rainy, windy, and cold that I was too miserable myself to really even laugh at all the scantily dressed girls. I have been to a lot of rap concerts in my time, but I am almost positive that Big Sean brought out the most diehard hoes, both in sheer numbers and sheer lack of clothes. I was fully clothed because it’s wintertime, and like I said, I was miserable.

While I was standing in line surrounded by a bunch of wannabe thug children, some guy tried to sell me his mixtape for a “donation,” and compared himself to Sir Mix-a-Lot, Blue Scholars, and Macklemore. Enough was enough, so I vacated and went to the only open place I noticed: some bar that I don’t know the name of. It was one of those fine establishments that offered peanuts, and the patrons could just throw the shells on the floor! I love making a mess and not cleaning up after myself! Between that novelty, and Twitter, my time was occupied as I cackled at the people waiting outside and marveled at the hoes not getting hypothermia.

Everything worked out beautifully, and I made it inside just before Shawn Chrys took stage! In fact, “Back That Azz Up” was playing as I entered the venue, so I knew I was in for a good time. It was like a sign.

I was especially excited to see Shawn Chrys perform, because I feel like I was introduced to his music at roughly the same time I started blogging, so I’ve felt some bizzaro type of kinship (I’m not a weirdo, I promise). Plus, his music is super dope, and he had a great stage presence. He performed a few cuts off Silent Films for the Blind, in addition to “Hangover” (the theme song for my weekend, smh) and “Catch Me If You Can,” which was sick live!

Because I was interviewing Shawn Chrys, I ended up watching CyHi The Prynce from backstage, feeling super duper fancy while doing so, and was also impressed by his set as well. He had as much energy as Shawn, and performed some of his G.O.O.D. Friday songs, as well as other cuts like “Emotional” and “1000 Pounds,” taking breaks to yell “ladies, if your pussy clean, scream!” I definitely enjoyed myself, and I definitely enjoyed dancing around backstage.

Right before CyHi finished his set, we headed back upstairs for the interview. DJ Mo Beatz, who was the guest at JetSetPDX/Finally Famous after party, absolutely killed it, and provided quite the nice backdrop to our interview. After interviewing CyHi, too, we all went downstairs to watch Big Sean as he went into “Gang Banger.”

In case you’re wondering, I was THISCLOSE to one of my life’s goals of shaking my A$$ onstage while Big Sean performed “A$$,” albeit it would have been backstage, but it still counts, right? It didn’t happen, but it’s all good. By the time he went into “A$$,” I was back in the crowd where I was safe. I exited at the stage area, so it was pretty terrifying to make my way through the crowd. Speaking of the crowd…it was like a hodge podge collection of World Star Hip Hop Gone Wild: The Teenage Edition. That’s how I would explain it. There was a lot of fuckery going on in that audience, and once I got to the back, I was able to take that crappy picture above. But at least I was safe.

By the way, the house went CRAZY when he performed “A$$.” It was the clear audience favorite, and Sodo immediately morphed into a crackin’ party. Seriously though, it was like an instantaneous change and as soon as “A$$” started, everyone began dancing. It was pretty dope, actually, to see the audience react like that. After he went into “My Last,” though, the concertgoers calmed down.

Following his performances of those two smashes, Sean started taking pictures of the audience for a long time, so I was confused if the show was over or what. Like, legitimately confused. When he decided that he took enough pictures, or his memory card was full, whichever came first, he made his triumphant return to perform “Marvin Gaye & Chardonnay.” I was so excited to hear him rap “bloop bloop” in person, and instead he shoved the microphone at the audience for us to yell it.

Big Sean asked if we wanted another song, which everyone screamed “YES” to, and he closed it out with his verse from the “All of the Lights (Remix)” that leaked months ago. Since both he and CyHi mentioned the G.O.O.D. compilation album that’s set to drop next year, I’m hoping that a final version of that remix will be featured on there.

I’ve always liked Big Sean, but I absolutely had a newfound respect for him as an artist after seeing him perform, and it’s safe to say that I even appreciate his album more than I did before. I really enjoyed how often he interacted with the audience, and how genuine he seemed in his appreciation for everyone supporting him. You can’t not like Big Sean!

All in all, I highly recommend you catch the Finally Famous Tour when it rolls near you. It is a G.O.O.D. show, and I’m sure you can imagine, but I was indeed living the G.O.O.D. life, and that night definitely went down as one of my most memorable nights ever. Like, I can play “Memories” and fondly reminisce about it.

PS So my friend Macy and I had switched twitter pictures a while ago, and I honestly didn’t think anyone would notice, but shockingly to me, some people did. So, that’s me (after standing outside in the winter rain, wind, and cold) and Shawn Chrys! I mean, #ShawnChrysBitch. I also like my red pants.
