Concert review – Cool Kids and their opener Pac Div

I arrived at the Showbox not a second too soon, because as I walked through the door, Pac Div took stage (they must have got the memo that I had arrived). To be honest, Pac Div was the reason I went last night and stayed up way too late on a week night, but their set was completely worth it. Too bad they performed like 2 songs. Actually, they performed 6 songs, but it might as well have been 2 because that’s how short it felt.  For a relatively new group, I was very surprised how well of a show they put on, and how good they sounded.  For example, compared to the live Nicki Minaj and Drake performances that I’ve suffered through, Pac Div was superior, by far.  I could understand them, unlike Nicki Minaj, and they were very comfortable on stage, unlike Drake.  Of course, they closed with “Mayor,” and the thought crossed mind that I should run for Mayor of Seattle, and I smirked to myself, thinking about the mess that McGinn is making.

Sad for the Cool Kids, who were cool I guess, but I was not terribly impressed with them.  In fact, I probably could have just left during their set and not felt guilty about it.  And it’s not because I don’t listen to their music, because I am really only familiar with Pac Div’s song “Mayor.”  I guess that the difference is that Pac Div’s performance made me want to listen to them, whereas I was pretty indifferent to the Cool Kids by the end of their set.  However, the crowd loved them as much as Pac Div, so maybe I’m just a little biased.  Ultimately, they just didn’t sound as polished to me, like their microphones were too loud or something.  One final thing–they came on at 10:45.  I’ve never been to a concert where the headliner hits the stage that early, even on weeknights!
