The Life & Times of Julie: SXSW, Day 2

I'm not saying that I wasn't expecting SXSW to be cracking after watching The-Dream perform in a church the previous night, but I wasn't sure if anything could quite compare to that ethereal experience. And, duh, spoiler alert, yesterday was just as great! I started at the SXSeattle Showcase, but left shortly thereafter to find some food because I get super cranky if I don't eat. After eating some mediocre pizza, I decided to scope out Deco Lounge, the scene of where I would spend most of my day for the Bout That Life Showcase. Afterward, I made my way to the Convention Center, after grabbing an iced Americano, to watch Steve Stoute and Nas on their special interview panel. One of the perks of having a a badge, if you will. Steve Stoute's book The Tanning of America was super interesting, and it was cool to hear and see them rehash old memories because they've grown up in the industry together, as Steve Stoute was Nas' manager early on before turning the advertising industry upside down, and they've known each other forever. Despite that all, I was kind of bored. Sue me! Interesting people, interesting topics, but hey, I wanted to be watching my favorite trap artists, so of course, I went back to the Deco Lounge. That's the flyer. I had to throw it in here. You know I was in heaven. With all the artists on that bill, I was pleasantly surprised to recognize Marcus Manchild when he took the stage, and pleasantly surprised by his set. I was even more pleasantly surprised to see Chase back in the bar, who happens to be one of the biggest G's I know. This I realized as we walked over to the Fader Fort and ...

The East Atlanta Santa (Gucci Mane) has been busy spreading some holiday cheer by remixing everything

Gucci Mane has been super busy lately dropping all his little verses over other people's songs that everyone else refers to as "remixes." Normally, I'm not the biggest fan of this move, but hey, I'm not gonna hate because that takes too much energy. For the most part, I like all the songs that he apparently likes, so either he has good taste or I don't. You'll probably be incredulous reading this, my dear reader, but Gucci actually sounds really good on this songs. More importantly, if you imagine him in the respective video while he's rapping, his remixes are approximately 100 times more enjoyable and you might laugh out loud. Drizzy's "The Motto." Drake hanging around with Mistah FAB, Berner, whoever else, E-40, and...Gucci Mane? Tell me that isn't funny. I haven't seen this video, or care enough to see if one exists, but the inclusion of Gucci would make 2 Chainz' "Riot" better. Trust. The video version I've seen of Tyga's "Rack City" includes explosions and a video ho, basically, in some fictional, mystical place named "Rack City." I'm envisioning that scene, with the explosion, where ...

Hot video – Berner ft. Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa & Big K.R.I.T. “Yoko”

I really, really like this song, as well as the video. There have been a lot of good videos dropping lately, so it seems. I vaguely recall that "Yoko" dropped a week or two ago, and I didn't pay it any attention. However, this morning I was making spaghetti sauce (it needs to simmer all day...I take my Italian food seriously) and I had MTV Jams on. Needless to say, I heard/watched this at least two times, and this song is hot. "Yoko" is over a Big K.R.I.T. beat, and boy, does it go. It could be my favorite Big K.R.I.T. production to date. It's just a great beat, with the heavy bass coupled with those melodic Asian motif things. And this video is pretty sick, too. Chris Brown's scene, although reminiscent of of the "Otis" video, was ill with the rotating viewpoint shit. I don't really speak music-video-director-angle-speak, but I like what was done. Even Wiz Khalifa, who normally really, really annoys me, is endearing here. Amazing. I don't think that it's necessarily portraying Yoko Ono in a positive way, which I'm fine with. I mean, I don't see any positivity in Chris Brown saying "Got a boatload of them Asian hoes." But speaking of Chris Breezy, even though he's a woman beater and possible sociopath, with him constantly releasing music like this, I can't hate him. I guess that goes to show music touches on one an emotional level.
