Thoughts on the #XXLFreshmen2012 cover that no one seems to care about anymore

And just like that, no one cares about this anymore. Yesterday, it occupied my twitter timeline more aggressively than any of the Occupy Wall Street protestors, and today, I see no whisper of it on my Twitter timeline. I'm writing about it mostly because I wrote nearly this whole post yesterday. Anywho, the yearly Freshmen issue, where XXL Magazine editors or whoever chooses a certain number of so-called Freshmen, is what keeps the magazine relevant, despite the fact that it really isn't that relevant (just examine the inductees each year). I don't really have too much to say about this cover, mostly because I work now, compared to the time when last year's cover dropped, so I don't have time to wake up at 11 every day and stay up until 2 AM making a whiny blog post about who should or shouldn't have been included. I only know who Machine Gun Kelly is because of that Lex Luger-produced song "Wild Boy" that makes me want to go start riots and burn stuff. But, let's be honest, the Fat Trel version is way better (why isn't Fat Trel on this list?). Danny Brown is a thirty year old Freshman. He's actually super dope, and I'm glad he's getting recognized, but it just goes to show how XXL Magazine truly has no guidelines or limitations on who can or can't be considered a "Freshman." That was my issue with last year's list, and that'll probably be my issue next year. Whenever I list to Future, I feel like I'm listening to a language immersion program CD. To what language, I don't know. Roscoe Dash is my favorite robotic hook man, having some of the more memorable hooks throughout the last year. I don't think I could handle ...

Hot song – Fat Trel “I’m a Slutty Boy (Foolio)”

So, Fat Trel is trill. Try saying that three times fast. Actually...I guess it isn't as difficult as I thought, considering I just sat here and did it. Anyway, I've always liked Fat Trel, but he isn't a rapper who I'm always bumping for some reason. Now I especially don't have an excuse. I've been listening to Fat Trel's take on Machine Gun kelly's song "Wild Boy," appropriately called "I'm a Slutty Boy (Foolio)" all day, and let me add that that "yeah bitch" in the beginning is a lot louder than I expected. Anyway, I wasn't sure why I liked it so much, but as soon as Google told me it was a Lex Luger production, it dawned on me. The light bulb flickered on. The Red Sea parted. Etc. I love Lex Luger. Machine Gun Kelly's original song with Waka Flocka Flame isn't bad, and Lex Luger's production kind of makes me want to start a riot somewhere, someday, but Fat Trel puts both MGK and Waka to shame. It's like he's a combination of them, or something? The best of both worlds? Plus, he isn't a white kid from Cleveland likening himself to Kurt Cobain by repeatedly shouting "Cobain back." MGK continues to confuse me with that one. Oh yeah, in case you were wondering, Fat Trel's crew out of DC is called the Slutty Boyz. Hence, him being a slutty boy. Download via TSS

Machine Gun Kelly and Ester Dean’s song “Invincible” sure reminds me of…

I'm kind of impartial/borderline apathetic/ignorant about Machine Gun Kelly--another white rapper? really??--but I kind of like his song "Wild Boy" with Waka Flocka Flame where they have that fire torch and doing a bunch of shit that Macy and I will be doing as soon as she moves to Seattle. If all of his music sounded like that, then I think that I would like him, even though he's saying "Cobain back." I don't get that one. They're both white. What else? I clicked 'play' on "Invincible," because I love Ester Dean. Her song "Drop It Low" is, and always will be, the jam.  Rap-Up write that "if the song sounds familiar, that’s because it’s featured in the HTC Rezound commercial." No, "Invincible" sounds familiar because it sounds exactly like "Words I Never Said." I really hate it when my intelligence is insulted, and I'm not talking about trap music. It took me less than 30 seconds to realize that Alex Da Kid took a page from Lex Luger's book, and these songs sound the same to me. Yay for mainstream music! Seen at Rap-Up
