The Life & Times of Julie: SXSW, Day 3

Yesterday, I woke up super tired. I was a little weary that any of the showcases I could attend would equal both previous days. I started my day hella late, for not really any reason at all, and decided to go through this random unofficial showcase that I had seen J*DaVeY tweeting that they were at. After eating at this delicious taco truck near the Fader Fort, and swooping through there to get some Vitaminwater (seriously...I did that) I rolled over to some shady looking place named Cielo in hopes of seeing J*DaVeY, who I had missed. Nonetheless, I decided to post up there, and who did I see in the crowd except Fly Moon Royalty? What a small world. Anyhow, some girl performed whose name I didn't catch (I felt compelled to mention that?) and then Idle Warship walked out on stage! In true Talib Kweli fashion, so it seems to me, he stopped the band midway through the first song, kind of threw a temper tantrum about never having played with said band even though they were great, and then proceeded to rock the stage with Res. Following Idle Warship, Dawn Richards, formerly of Dirty Money (yeah who knew that that band was around still so that she could be a former member?) came out and did an impressive set. While I could never figure out what she was wearing, she was so bossy up there! She did a great cover of Frank Ocean's "Novacane," in addition to a bunch of Dirty Money songs. Do you know what she's wearing? Let's see, after her, Terrace Martin came out with 9th Wonder as his DJ. Yeah, no big deal. Pause. Terrace is an artist ...

The Life & Times of Julie: SXSW, Day 2

I'm not saying that I wasn't expecting SXSW to be cracking after watching The-Dream perform in a church the previous night, but I wasn't sure if anything could quite compare to that ethereal experience. And, duh, spoiler alert, yesterday was just as great! I started at the SXSeattle Showcase, but left shortly thereafter to find some food because I get super cranky if I don't eat. After eating some mediocre pizza, I decided to scope out Deco Lounge, the scene of where I would spend most of my day for the Bout That Life Showcase. Afterward, I made my way to the Convention Center, after grabbing an iced Americano, to watch Steve Stoute and Nas on their special interview panel. One of the perks of having a a badge, if you will. Steve Stoute's book The Tanning of America was super interesting, and it was cool to hear and see them rehash old memories because they've grown up in the industry together, as Steve Stoute was Nas' manager early on before turning the advertising industry upside down, and they've known each other forever. Despite that all, I was kind of bored. Sue me! Interesting people, interesting topics, but hey, I wanted to be watching my favorite trap artists, so of course, I went back to the Deco Lounge. That's the flyer. I had to throw it in here. You know I was in heaven. With all the artists on that bill, I was pleasantly surprised to recognize Marcus Manchild when he took the stage, and pleasantly surprised by his set. I was even more pleasantly surprised to see Chase back in the bar, who happens to be one of the biggest G's I know. This I realized as we walked over to the Fader Fort and ...

I like what Talib Kweli tweeted about Occupy Wall Street

It's been a while since I jacked tweets for a post. Normally, I pride myself on the written aspect of my blog, as opposed to just posting stuff to download or whatever (plus I'm scared that ICE will come after me), but yeah whatever. I felt like that sentence should have a second half to it, to contrast what I normally do, but I don't have anything. Talib Kweli has been at the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City, and I glanced at his tweets while I was at work, and I just like, "well shit, that's pretty cool." He brought up a lot of great points in 140 characters or less, and I felt more educated after reading those than I do trying to listen to political pundits regardless of the station. You know, sometimes people are far more eloquent than me, and I'm ok with that. Follow Talib Kweli on twitter.

Bun B recruits some special guests for his Ethics of Hip Hop Panel at Rice University

I always say that I went to the wrong college...and things like this further affirm my belief. UP never had any dope concerts, let alone lectures. I should have gone somewhere like Rice University in Houston, where Bun B is a "Distinguished Lecturer" with his Religious Studies 331: Religion and Hip-Hop Culture course. "Professor Trill," as he's known, hosted his second panel today called The Ethics of Hip Hop. He had special guests Talib Kweli, Tre 9, Trae tha Truth, Lupe Fiasco, and Malice for tonight's great discussion. Julia Beverly and DeviDev were tweeting about it if you're that interested, but I'm hoping that some footage of the panel finds its way online! I. Would. Have. Died. If there was a course like this that was offered at UP. The sad thing is, with a course as great as this, it probably wouldn't have even been filled up. We were required to take three religion courses, being that it is a Catholic school (I'm not Catholic though). We took a 100 level world religion introduction course, which I learned nothing in, a 200 level Biblical Studies course where we didn't even have to read the Bible, again where I learned nothing, and then an upper division course and I can't even remember what I ended up taking. But Hip Hop and Religion?!?! That would have been so trill, especially if it was Professor Trill teaching it! Julia Beverly and Ozone Mag were in the building, and taped Professor Trill and Lupe responding to a school teacher about education. HipHopDX ran a whole article on it if you don't want to watch it. Lupe has a point: miseducation, no matter the source, is ...

Concert review – Talib Kweli, Fashawn and Grynch on the Gutter Rainbows Tour in Seattle

The Gutter Rainbows Tour kicked off in Seattle last night, but before heading over there, I went to Easy Street Records for Talib's in-store signing. Good move on my part, and I got to purchase a hard copy of Gutter Rainbows (previously it was for digital download only) and I was able to meet him! Talib was pretty soft spoken and very nice, so of course that encouraged me to ramble about how I really respect and admire both him and his music for being so politically outspoken. He probably gets that all the time...but he was still nice enough to take a picture with me.Anyway, I left for the concert, and after driving around for a good ten minutes, and paying way too much to park in a lot, and then of course being hassled by a homeless lady, I arrived at my destination: Showbox at the Market. Everything was fine until I tried to get into the bar because the bouncer didn't think it was me on my ID. Here's a spoiler alert for you, my dear reader--I look like myself on my ID...because I'm me. Unmistakably so, I'm me. The thing that made me even more mad was without fail, this happens at the Market every time I go. At least I didn't have to sign my name five times on a notepad like last time. I completely understand that they have a job to do, but damn. And not to mention, I arrived at the end of Grynch's set, which I wasn't happy about, either.I was thinking that it was kind of like deja vu with Grynch and Fashawn on the same bill, but it didn't ...
