Hot song – Theophilus London ft. A$AP Rocky “Big Spender”

I'm in love with this song. On one hand, maybe I relate to it, but on the other hand, it brings back fond memories of almost being trampled by Theophilus London and A$AP Rocky at SXSW. Plus, I love how the samples separate their verses, which they snap on, by the way. It's jazzy, but when the tempo speeds up? And the drums and high hats kick in? Oh boy. If I was a "sugar mama," or whatever, this song would like hypnotize me into buying shit for anyone. Or maybe the flashing gif alone would hypnotize me. Spotted at Xclusivezone.net

The Life & Times of Julie: SXSW, Day 1

Without boring you, my dear reader, of my antics, I'll start my tale with picking up my badge, which is basically my (semi) all-access pass into official SXSW showcases. Like, who cares that my flights were delayed, and my housemate sheltered some weirdo random kid who could have been an axe murderer for all we know? Pretty much, my day started at the Loft at 718, where one of my favorite DJ's DJ100proof was spinning, and my homegirl Hollis explained her attack mode for the festival. Let me say, I was really fucking overwhelmed at the start of this festival. Could I have planned this better? Could I have done some planning at all? Yes, and yes. Anyway, I chilled out, and we walked over into the general direction of the Fader Fort, which is like the place where hipsters go to meet hipsters and not enjoy the music being played. Or maybe they do. I'm not really sure because I'm obviously not a hipster. While walking over there, we ran into Shawn Chrystopher on the street (what up Shawn!), and I ended up going to get my wristband and stay over there to see Big K.R.I.T. I mistakenly thought K.R.I.T. was on at 3:00, mostly because I didn't have a schedule of any sort. I listened to two rock bands who sounded the same (isn't that what people say about rap music who don't listen to it) and drank free Vitaminwater and Smartwater. Big K.R.I.T.'s set was so impressive! No diss to Seattle, but it was great to be in a crowd that actually enjoyed his music, that was dancing around, and wilding out. If you've ever been to a rap show in Seattle, you'd know that most people just stand there with blank looks ...

The East Atlanta Santa (Gucci Mane) has been busy spreading some holiday cheer by remixing everything

Gucci Mane has been super busy lately dropping all his little verses over other people's songs that everyone else refers to as "remixes." Normally, I'm not the biggest fan of this move, but hey, I'm not gonna hate because that takes too much energy. For the most part, I like all the songs that he apparently likes, so either he has good taste or I don't. You'll probably be incredulous reading this, my dear reader, but Gucci actually sounds really good on this songs. More importantly, if you imagine him in the respective video while he's rapping, his remixes are approximately 100 times more enjoyable and you might laugh out loud. Drizzy's "The Motto." Drake hanging around with Mistah FAB, Berner, whoever else, E-40, and...Gucci Mane? Tell me that isn't funny. I haven't seen this video, or care enough to see if one exists, but the inclusion of Gucci would make 2 Chainz' "Riot" better. Trust. The video version I've seen of Tyga's "Rack City" includes explosions and a video ho, basically, in some fictional, mystical place named "Rack City." I'm envisioning that scene, with the explosion, where ...

Beyonce swaggerjacked Khia’s “Party” and brought J. Cole along for some reason

What is a bitch to do?! Here I am, all ready to throw on a chain and draw an ice cream cone on my face for Halloween, when Beyonce is traipsing around in a homemade tank top, no pants, and a fannie pack. That would be far more tempting if it didn't feel like the dead of winter already in Seattle. When "Single Ladies" came out, and my former roommie Megan dressed up in the leotard and heels. Yeah, we could also pretty much do all the choreography for that video, too. I miss all that free time I had in college... I never really cared for this song, and I guess this wasn't the type of "Party" that Kanye or Andree 3000 had in mind. I'm sure there's a perfectly plausible explanation as to why Andre 3000 couldn't be in the video, like his cat stunt double wasn't available, and we all know Kanye is too busy running around Paris, so that explains that. J. Cole's verse? It is very underwhelming to me, and I can't begin to describe that feeling of disappointment in the pit of my stomach when it's him who gets out of the whip instead of 3 Stacks. To add further insult to injury, J. Cole said in an interview that he had prepared multiple verses, and his favorite wasn't even the one that Beyonce chose. On an unrelated note, did anyone else notice that snake slithering across the pavement at 2:11 as Cole exits the car? A very interesting visual. Similar to how she's done in her other videos from 4, Beyonce borrowed the concept for "Party" from Khia. Even if Khia wasn't crazy, in a good way of course, there's still no doubt ...
